about
Today the riders in the Tour de France once again ascend the Col du Tourmalet, the oldest and arguably greatest big climb in this grandest of grand tours. To commemorate the occasion, the rouleurs in Electricity for Everybody! offer a new mix of “Tourmalet,” the lead single from their recently-released album Local Technique.
This feverish, heatstroke remix by Graham Lessard pays homage to bittersweet Tour legends such as Eugène Christophe, the rider from a century ago who epitomizes the heartache and perseverance of competitive cycling. In 1913, Christophe was the odds-on favorite to win the Tour – until he was sideswiped by a car near the top of the Tourmalet, an accident that left him unscathed but snapped his bike’s fork. Undeterred, he carried his broken machine down the mountain, found a village forge, hammered out a new fork, and finished the stage – losing nearly four hours to the winner, plus ten minutes’ penalty for accepting help on the bellows from a child at the forge. Unsurprisingly, he did not win that Tour. More surprisingly, he had his race hopes dashed twice more – in 1919 and 1922 – because of broken forks.
